Veteran’s Day – World Peace Through Inner Peace

Veterans Day Thank youVeteran's Day is a day set aside to honor all Vets of all wars, while Memorial Day is a day to honor those that made the ultimate sacrifice with their lives.  Many Vets come home from military service with conditions that don't go away including PTSD or post traumatic stress disorder.

We honor all of our Vets, we so appreciate the sacrifice they and their families make.

November 11th, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set up as a United States legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918.  An Act approved on May 13, 1938 made the 11th of November a day dedicated to the cause of world peace and to honor the veterans of WWI.  The Act was amended in 1954 and Armistice Day was changed to Veteran's Day to honor all American Veterans of all wars.

Check out our special program dedicated to Veterans.

At one point, Veteran's Day was celebrated with the weekend so that you had a 3 day weekend.  However, President Gerald Ford declared, this was a holiday set up in honor of the end of WWI at 11:00 am, on the 11th day, of the 11th month.  And so he changed the federal holiday back to be celebrated in honor of that.

Vets suffer many conditions in silence.  Their families feel the effects.  Many Vets have a difficult time integrating back into society and into their families.

Major issues Vets face.

  • Over half the Vets that continue to visit their doctor are suffering from continuing pain in their backs, knees, necks, or shoulders.  Many report chronic muscle pain.
  • Sleep apnea
  • Hearing loos and impairment
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Vibration exposure can cause lower back pan or numbness in the extremities.
  • Traumatic Brain Injury, more severe than a concussion.  It can lead to brain dysfunction, shorter attention spans, language disabilities, and can lead to PTSD and depression.
  • Adrenal fatigue, which often goes undiagnosed.
  • Sleep challenges.

Treatments are available.

The American Heart Association found that exposure to chemicals can trigger convulsions and death on the battlefield, also cause long-term heart damage.

As a rule, vets suffer disproportionately from certain infections that civilians almost never experience.  Some of these conditions cause abdominal pain, fever, diarrhea, headaches, muscle pain, weakness, anemia.

Treatments:  most of these infectious diseases can only be treated for the symptoms.  VA facilities do not cover alternative treatment options.  And there are many alternative practitioners with the skills to treat infectious diseases.

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), occurs as a result of military trauma but also develops from physical illnesses that vets face as the years pass.  Many practitioners wish to take the disorder part of the name off and et rid of that label.  All it is is, Post traumatic stress and there are many tools to help relieve the symptoms.  It is treatable.  This condition needs to be treated in the whole family - not just the vet.  It is treatable.
    • Invasive thoughts, reminders of the trauma, flashbacks, nightmares.
    • They may avoid things that remind them of the traumatic event - including people.
    • Negative changes in thoughts and moods.
    • Those suffering are on guard all the time, they are jumpy and emotional reactive.
  • Violent behavior
  • Depression
  • Alcohol abuse

PTSD or depression seriously impairs the daily life for about 1/3 of Vets.

Medicine has come a long way.  But there are many alternative practitioners that a whole range of tools to help ALL the general symptoms Vets deal with.  SADLY….. The VA doesn't normally pay
for this.  But it is worth it to look at alternative treatments.  Do some research and try some different modalities.  Alternative treatments are becoming more normal for most people.   The Department of Defense and the VA are increasingly embracing a wider range of complementary and alternative medicine techniques, such as yoga, meditation, acupuncture, Tai Chi, biofeedback, massage, hypnosis guided imagery and relaxation therapy.

Keys to good health.  Anything you can do to improve your health will reduce dependence on drugs and support the body and the mind to heal.

  1. It is important to continue drinking a good amount of water.  Many complaints of pain can be attributed to dehydration.
  2. Food - eat a healthy, balanced diet.   Keeping your blood sugar balanced helps you to deal with situations much easier.  Eating a diet rich in fruits and veggies provides necessary anti-oxidants to help reduce stress in the body.  Eat good protein sources helps to build and repair the body.  Without good food, any injuries sustained have a harder time to heal and can result in permanent damage.
    1. Healing the gut with nourishing foods and herbs like Slippery Elm or the amino acid L-Glutamine help the body recovery from adrenal fatigue by repairing the gut.  Most serotonin is produced in the gut.  Getting the gut balanced can help with depression, anxiety and even extreme PTSD symptoms.
    2. Adding in cultured foods helps.  Check out our radio program from last week for tips.
    3. Limit processed foods and processed sugars.  They can exacerbate mood swings and energy fluctuations.
    4. Avoid caffeine - as it can make adrenal fatigue worse and lower your energy rather than increase your energy.
  3. Exercise helps diffuse stress in the body and can help with PTSD.  It helps to burn off adrenaline and releases endorphins that make you feel better mentally and physically.
    1. Yoga - has so many benefits for MOST of the conditions Vets face.  The practice of yoga helps relieve pain, stretches the body and brings comfort physically and mentally.
      1. Specific yoga practices can help with sleep issues.
      2. Check out Yoga Warriors - a program approved by the National Association of social workers to help.  Their mission is to help deal with PTSD or any combat related stress or reintegration stress.  It also helps with releasing emotional issues and help relax the body.
    2. Meditation calms the nervous system, can help with sleep, may be very helpful for PTSD.
    3. There are many practitioners that teach meditation and yoga specifically tailored to Vets, especially those dealing with PTSD.
  4. Acupuncture is growing in popularity.  The Military Stress Recovery Project has 25 clinics that provide free acupuncture to veterans in the US.  Research is showing that acupuncture improves a lot - including reduced pain, stress, anxiety, depression and improved sleep.
  5. Environment - Create a peaceful spot to relax and meditate.  Create a space that is safe.
  6. Music therapy promotes physical, mental and emotional recovery for veterans.  And even helps with Traumatic brain injury.
  7. Vibroacoustic Bed therapy helps with stress, sleep issues, and even pain.
  8. BioMat - increases circulation, helps the body to heal from Adrenal fatigue, and many other complaints, reduces inflammation and helps with pain.
    1. To get your own BioMat - the company is offering $100 off the professional price with proof of military service.
  9. Get outdoors and do something physical.  Do something challenging like whitewater rafting - it challenges your sense of vulnerability and helps your nervous system become unstuck and may help transition back to civilian life.
  10. Rest - when you rest is when your restore.  If you have sleep challenges then find one of these techniques to help.  Sleeping pills may prevent you from getting into Stage 4 REM sleep - which is where you process the drama and trauma.  The trauma in your life may prevent you from getting to REM sleep as well, which is why it is vital to process the trauma.
  11. Avoid alcohol and drugs - substance abuse makes symptoms worse.
  12. Own your power and take responsibility for your health.
  13. The LifeLine Technique is one of the most powerful tools to help.  We have helped many vets, who then report they are able to sleep and not be so reactive in nature.
    1. The LifeLine technique helps you to understand the true meaning of symptoms, stress, and disease - they represent unprocessed emotionally charge memories - some of them may be buried in the subconscious mind.   This dynamic and practical system bridges ancient healing arts with modern ways of processing and healing.
    2. The LifeLIne is a tool to shift - helping you to get in touch with your heart and create optimal health.
    3. The beauty of the lifeline - it is not a therapy session where you have to relive traumatic events over and over.  It is content free, meaning you don't need to "talk" about painful experiences.  As guided by your subsconcsous mind, you will focus on different emotional concepts as we process.
    4. Coming in 2016 is a brand new eLearning course that can help you learn some of the basics of the LifeLine - valuable for family members dealing with someone with PTSD.  A great tool to help yourself and other family members.
  14. EVOX - is a powerful tool to help PTSD and other traumatic experiences.  It is described as a very gentle and yet very therapeutic took - similar to EMDR, which has been used for the treatment of trauma.  EVOX facilitates perception reframing - the way you feel and think about something.  With EVOX it is possible to quickly and painlessly shift, or reframe perception at a conscious and subconscious level. Perception reframing allows for a more mature or functional reality and is used to improve any aspect of human performance.
  15. In addition to therapies, there are many homeopathic, flower essences, herbal remedies and essential oils which can assist with symptoms whether physical or mental.

What Can We Do to Help?thank-you-veterans_1244

  • Do not set off fireworks at home, especially if you know you have a neighbor that is a Vet.
  • Do no judge.
  • Be kind and respectful.
  • Donate your frequent flyer miles so Vets and their families can travel to see each other or seek medical treament.
  • Say thank you.
  • Help get homeless Vets off the street.
  • Show respect.

Mission Possible:  World Peace Through Creating Inner Peace

World peace begins with each of us.  The Dalai Lami as said, "World peace can only be attained through inner peace."

Inner peace comes as a result of personal responsibility, letting go, and processing emotions.  We to be accepting and loving.

Researchers have been studying the effects of meditation and its affects on the human body, but also the effects on our communities.

Research is clear, the heart-based emotions of the world's population seems to be influencing the magnetic fields of the earth!   The relationship is clear:  A change in the way we feel about ourselves and our world has the potential to affect the world itself.  If the change is a positive one then the effect of the emotions that result should be positive, as well.

Such a positive change is known to create coherence between the heart and the brain and it appears that the effect extends into the fields that support life on our planet.  The HeartMath researcher say, "Regulating emotions is the next frontier in human evolution."

The numbers it takes to effect a change is relatively small, in a community of 10,000; all it takes is 10 people experiencing coherence through mediation to effect the population.

Read more about this exciting work and how you can help at the Heart Math Institute.

Science is really showing us that we can on an individual level affect the world.  We can create world peach through inner peace.

Six Foundational Steps to Heal Your Body

Health Words Related To Healthcare by David Castillo Dominici at FDPNaturopathic medicine is an approach to health, wellness and healing that recognizes the amazing whole body.  It treats the whole person.  Naturopathy supports the body to do it's job, it treats the whole person.  Wellness and prevention are the keys; while disease is treated through stimulation, enhancement and support.  Treatments are chosen to support a person's vital energy with respect to the natural healing process.   With these 6 foundational steps, you can heal your body.

Tune in to listen to our Get Real! with Mark and Kally show to hear more about the Six Foundational Steps to Heal Your Body.

I am trained in natural medicine and daily I see the value and order of these 6 steps to heal your body.

There are many different healing modalities that fall in this category and include things you can do at home like nutrition, meditation and exercise to acupuncture and herbal medicine that you may want to consult with someone about.

Hippocrates, who is know as the father of medicine - is actually the father of naturopathy,  was born around the year 460 BC on the Greek island of Kos.  He is credited with being the first person to believe that disease were caused naturally and not because of superstition.   He believed disease was the product of environmental factors, diet, and living habits.  His theories have been proven correct.  Hippocratic medicine and its philosophy are very far removed from that of modern medicine.  Instead, his approach was very passive and based on "the healing power of nature."

His doctrine taught that the body contained within itself the power to re-balance and heal.  This therapy focused on simply easing this natural process.

The 6 fundamental principles are:  Anatomy by farconville FDP

  1. Healing power of nature
  2. Identify and treat the cause
  3. Do no harm
  4. Treat the whole person
  5. The physician is a teacher (or should be)
  6. Prevention is the best cure

Many people practicing the art of naturopathy are referred to as "Quacks".

Here is the definition of a quack:  An untrained person who practices medicine fraudulently, or any person who pretends to have knowledge or skill in a particular field, charlatan.

The original quacks were selling a fake 'snake oil' and crude oil, which is one of the roots of modern the pharmaceutical industry.  The real snake oil came from Chinese water snakes and was used by Chinese immigrants - it is and was omega 3 oil known today to help with all the conditions the Chinese were using it for back then.  Chinese water snakes were hard to come by, so greedy people started having Rattle snake shows and using them to obtain 'snake oil' and they are lower in omega 3 oils.  Soon snake oil started containing ingredients like mustard oil, pine oil, petroleum, paprika, camphor, cayenne and wintergreen oil.  Rock oil, crude petroleum was sold for many complaints.

There are some 'quacks' with medical degrees.  And there are some 'quacks' with various degrees and certificates in alternative or natural medicine.

Most Naturopaths are SKILLED and they DO NOT practice medicine.

Health Disease Buttons Shows Healthcare by Stuart Miles at FDPThere are quite a few differences between Western Medicine and Traditional Naturopathy.   As a naturopath I look for the root cause and I look for how I can help the body to heal following the 6 steps.  It is simple and straightforward.  We treat the cause.  Most western trained medical practitioners treat symptoms.

Here is an example, heartburn.  If you complain of heart burn or acid reflux to a western trained medical professional, you will likely be given a prescription to neutralize the acid.  Sounds simple and reasonable and most people 'fall' for that 'quick fix'.  The problem is, it doesn't always work, there are several SEVERE side effects to this seemingly harmless medication, it is attempting to treat only the symptoms, it DOES NOT CURE or treat the real problem and IT MAKES THE CONDITION WORSE.

Instead, we look at the body.  This is ussually a sign of too little acid and you can't digest your food and a sign of poor digestion.  We want to HELP THE BODY TO DO IT'S JOB.  So we encourage more water (often dehydration is a big factor), we check diet and make adjustments as needed, supply the body with food enzymes and possibly probiotics.  We check to see if we need to heal any part of the digestive system.  And amazingly, the body begins to digest the food better and symptoms go away.

With Rx treaments you WILL have negative side effects, it is just a matter of time; digestion is NOT improved and you will suffer from lack of nutrients feeding the body.

With a naturopathic approach you WILL have the opportunity to heal your body and Mortar And Pestle With Herb by Praisaeng at FDPimprove your health.  Unfortunately there are many so-called alternative practitioners only treating symptoms.  You'll see examples of this with people handing out herbs or essential oils for regularly occurring headaches rather than looking at and treating the root cause of the headaches.

As a specialist, I work with 7 Steps,  in my approach to natural medicine:  water, food, rest, exercise, own your power, environment, and play.  I get to the roots and help you, heal your body.

Laughter is The Best Medicine

Debra laughingDebra Norwood, AKA The Laughter Lawyer, had the opportunity to meet the real Patch Adams, founder of the Gesundheit! Institute.

Robin Williams played the role in a movie entitle Patch Adams based on Patch's life.  Patch Adams is a medical doctor and a clown, and feels medicine should be free and available to everyone.  His work and his life reflect the idea that 'Laughter is the best medicine'.

You can read more about Laughter Therapy in this article on alternative therapies.

At one point in his life he felt very suicidal and then entered a mental hospital that changed him.  He wanted to become a medical doctor and help people.

Patch went on to start making his one dream into a reality. He believed that the medical system was twisted and that it cheated poor people. So, he decided that he wanted to build a hospital.  His Gesundheit Institute is not completely perfected, but it is up and running.

patch_adams_1One person said of the Institute: "There, amongst beautiful mountains, hardwood forests and waterfalls, Gesundheit advocates are constructing a holistic rural hospital and healthcare community based on the vision of what healthcare should be like. That means patient care where laughter, joy and creativity will be an integral part of the healing process. Healthcare will be provided without cost and allopathic doctors and practitioners of alternative medicine will work side by side."

Tune in and find out why Memphis City Lawyer, Debra Norwood became a Certified Laughter Therapist, and why she has a deep respect for Patch Adams.  She had the opportunity to spend a week with Patch learning from him and be challenged by him.

You can follow Debra Norwood, The Laughter Lawyer on Facebook.  Catch the show on Patch Adams at Blogtalk radio.

Alternative Health Care Options with Complementary and Alternative Medicine or CAM

The use of complementary and alternative medicine or CAM is on the rise.  CAM is a group of diverse treatments and remedies that are not considered part of conventional medicine.  According to surveys, about 36% of U.S. adults have used a form of CAM therapy.

There are many reasons people are turning to alternative medicine and therapies.     I turned to alternative therapy many years ago because conventional medicine didn’t have the answers for our needs.  Conventional medicine has a valuable place in our society, but we must be diligent and learn all we can to take responsibility for our health care to seek the best possible help when and where necessary.

For our family, Mark was on a bunch of prescription medication since childhood and possibly for the rest of his life.   We sought help to heal the issues and get off the medications so that he could live a more full life – after all he was in his 20’s.  We were successful utilizing knowledge of herbs, food, nutrition, and drinking more water.  His health challenges began to heal and very quickly he no longer had emergency room visits, needed prescriptions or over the counter medication (OTC).  Alternative medicine helped us understand some of the basic needs of the body and when addressed, the body began to heal.

I have a daughter that we took for her regular six-month vaccines.  She had a terrible reaction and began passing out unconscious from that day for the next nine years.  No one could find anything wrong with her – no medical professional that is.  With all their tests, from coast to coast we checked with doctor after doctor and nothing.  Their best guess was that she would eventually grow out of it.  We were grateful for their knowledge that nothing else was wrong and that as far as they could tell, she was fine.  That helped me cope with her regular episodes of passing out.   So we turned again to CAM and found someone that used a computer to ‘scan’ my daughter.  This is one of the reasons I went back to school and have my own computer to scan people with our Zyto technology.  We found toxins related to vaccines in her system and gave her a homeopathic remedy for those toxins.  To this day, my daughter has not passed out again; she is now 21 years old.   Check out this YouTube video interview of me for the LifeLine talking about how I was looking for alternative medicine and therapies.

Our reasons were to improve our health and to find answers when conventional medicine didn’t have them.  Other times in our lives, it was a financial necessity.   Medicine can be very expensive.   While we have loved most of the doctors we have seen, we also recognize their limits.  Studies show that many people choose CAM therapies combined with conventional medicine.  This is the ideal situation.   Others try CAM for curiosity sake or because they are referred by a professional.  Many use CAM because of their backgrounds from another country or because of a positive experience from someone else.

In our store, Indigo Mountain, we see a lot of people that use CAM therapies because they didn’t get answers from medicine, they don’t have insurance to cover conventional medicine, they don’t want to be on pills for the rest of their lives, conventional medical treatments made them feel worse or didn’t work as well as they hoped, or they are working with their doctor combined with CAM therapy.

The one thing I’ve learned is that I need to be an expert in me and I needed to be open-minded to other treatments and medicine.  There just isn’t one way to solve a problem or one magic cure.  Everyone is unique and thank goodness we have so many options.

All over the world, traditional and alternative therapies have been used for centuries with great results.  And it is sometimes the basics that offer the best cure.  Because they are so basic, we often overlook them. Can it be that simple?

  1. Water it is vital for ever cell, is a great remedy for indigestion.  It can easily clear up many complaints from pain to hunger.  It is a great anti-histamine.
  2. Food, or that is the right food can heal our bodies.  The father of medicine, Hippocrates said, “Let food by thy medicine and let medicine be thy food.”   Proper nourishment can help with anger, ADHD, digestive, flu and so much more – everything.  Even cancer research is showing how valuable a proper diet is for healing the body.  Food can either contribute to illness or strengthen your body.
  3. Rest is often sacrificed as we become a rushed and hurried people.  When your body rests, it restores.
  4. Exercise does a lot for the body. Not only does it help to keep you fit, it stimulates the thyroid, releases important brain chemicals, helps with constipation, improves the mood and more.  A fit body is able to do its job better.  Strong, flexible muscle supports stronger bones and supports the organs.

Those basics are your responsibility, check out this link for a great message from Dr. Darren Weissman.  Your doctor or alternative practitioner can’t do this for you and it is the foundation of health and wellness.

Naturopathy is the earliest known healing system.  There is evidence of fasting, emetics, sweats, herbs, essential oils, and water for effectively treating people.   It is the understanding that nature can cure and it is the job of the physician to assist the process.  The approach recognizes the integrity of the whole person.  We are more than just our heart for example.  I have a client that was nearly killed because the different specialists were literally fighting about what was most important.  The family consulted me and I could see the problem – the side effects of one treatment were seriously damaging another that was already stressed.  So I recommended they find a general practitioner immediately and begin treating the body as a whole.  He added some alternative therapies and supplements I recommended and were approved by his new general practitioner.  He is alive and well to this day.

There are 6 basic principles of Naturopathy:

  1. First do no harm.
  2. The healing power of nature.  The body under normal conditions is a self-sustaining organism.   It is a brilliant machine.  If you cut yourself, your body begins to heal – beautifully.  We support the body by cleaning the wound and allow it to do its job.  It has a wonderful ability to adapt and repair.  The healing process is ordered and intelligent.
  3. Identify and treat the cause.  Symptoms should be dealt with and not merely suppressed.   It is important to get to root or the body will continue to speak with other symptoms.   Causes can be physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual.    Simply put, if you have a thorn, remove it, don’t just take a pain killer for the pain.
  4. Heal the whole person.  This requires a comprehensive approach.  While a specialist is fantastic in their knowledge of a single system, we are more than our heart.
  5. The physician is the teacher.  They should educate and encourage the person to take responsibility for their health and well-being.  They are simply a catalyst for change.   It is the patient that ultimately heals themselves.
  6. Prevention is the best medicine.  It is easier and cheaper to prevent than it is to cure disease.   This is accomplished through education and promoting good life habits.

Some other traditional, complimentary, and alternative therapies – CAM are:

  • Prayer and meditation are actually one of the most popular CAM therapies
  • Exercise:  Rebounding, Yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Cross fit, dancing and traditional.  Important aspects are:  stretching, aerobic, strength, and balance.
  • Sound and music including Vibroacoustic therapy*
  • Far Infrared therapy from saunas and BioMat*, if interested please contact us.

*These are therapies that we can provide through Indigo Mountain.  There are many great techniques out there.   We use a wide range of therapies and remedies ourselves.  While I love aromatherapy, I don’t use it for everything.  I look for the easiest, least expensive and best approach that will give me the support for my body’s needs.  For example if I have a headache, I may need to drink more water, use lavender essential oil or take magnesium.  It wouldn’t make sense to use an essential oil, if I was indeed dehydrated or needed magnesium.   I don’t always use a chiropractor either, sometimes magnetic therapy or massage therapy does the trick.  Just the other day, I had a back ache and some essential oils applied after a hot and cold shower (water therapy) did the trick. In an hour I was pain free.

Between all the complementary and alternative therapies out there and our wonderful medical doctors, we are blessed to have lots of options to achieve health and wellness.

Stomach Upset or Stomach Flu Quick and Easy Home Rememdies

The stomach flu is not really the flu but is gastroenteritis and can be cause by a virus, bacteria, or parasite.  You may experience:  stomach ache, nausea, abdominal pains, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, fever and swollen lymph glands.  A complication that can occur and you want to guard against is dehydration.

Food sensitivities can also mimic the symptoms of gastroenteritis caused by a virus, bacteria, or parasite.  And we will talk about food sensitivities in another article.  However many of these remedies can give relief especially the slipper elm mentioned.

A good list of general recommendations of when to call your doctor can be found at WebMd.  Please check with your doctor before trying alternative remedies.

Here are remedies that have been around a long time and have worked for our family.   All the information provided is of historical nature and is not intended to diagnose or prescribe remedies.  You should always seek advise of a health care physician or medical doctor.

Watch against dehydration.  Even if there is vomiting, you still want to make sure they get liquids.  Often people will tell you that you should drink a clear soda.  But nothing could be further from the truth.  The added sugar to the diet drops the effectiveness of the immune system.  Avoid sugar as much as possible, and especially when sick.

There are many fun and healthy ways to get liquid into your kids and 'big kids' / adults when feeling sick.  When the person is vomiting they may not want to drink anything.   But they really need to attempt to get fluids in.  I have found for me the best thing to do is drink distilled water when sick and especially with the stomach flu.   Dr. Christopher advocated distilled water as a hungry water.  I have seen people sick, drink distilled water and feel much better.  By the way he makes wonderful herbal remedies and we carry his full line products.  So keep offering water.  You can also offer ice chips or crushed ice.  Be careful with small children that ice is appropriate for them.

Another great idea is to blend up fresh fruit like watermelon and then freeze in popsicle molds or paper cups with a stick.  You can add extra water and stevia or raw honey to sweeten.  They are hard to resist.

Make sure that any juices you give have no added sugar to them or high fructose corn syrup.  Fresh juices are always best.

Activated charcoal capsules helps absorb and remove toxins and other irritants in the digestive tract.  It helps binds toxins and expel gas.  We have used this remedy successfully during bouts of stomach flu.  Which ever end it comes back out, it will not look pretty as a result of the black charcoal.  But it is effective.

Essential oils from Scentsations that are particularly good to use are:  peppermint, ginger, and our synergy called Tummy Rub - these address the symptoms.  You may also want to use Oregano, our synergies Fortify or Spice Traders to boost the immune system.   They call all be applied topically which is nice when your throwing up everything you put in.  They can be applied over the abdominal area, the bottom of the feet, the wrists, the back of the neck or along the spine.  Apply 2 times daily or use the peppermint, ginger, or Tummy Rub as needed for symptoms.  Peppermint and ginger can be used internally are refreshing in a glass of water to sip.  Just 1 drop goes a long way.  Oregano can be used internally and is a great remedy for stomach flu.  You can put it in capsules - it only takes 2 to 3 drops at a time - to swallow as it is a hot oil.  Another trick we use is to put the drops on a small piece of bread and fold it up like a capsule and swallow away.   Do not take oregano for more than 2 weeks in a row - after that give the body a break.

*Please use caution when starting to use essential oils for the first time.  See what your body will do.  Start slow and use 1 at a time.  They are wonderful remedies, but you always want to see what your body will do.  I blend my essential oils to use most of the time especially for use on children.  A little goes a long way.

My friend from Germany taught me a great remedy for nausea that can stop it in its tracks and it worked on my son so fast I couldn't believe it - Black Tea.  And it doesn't take much.  Another person recommended black tea with a slice of ginger and honey.

Other herbal teas that can be soothing are:  rooibos, peppermint, chamomile, peppermint with chamomile, peppermint with a slice of fresh ginger, or fennel and catnip.  Sweeten with honey - I think raw local honey is the best.

Herbal remedies can be soothing and effective.  Kid-e-Col or Stomach Comfort which are both catnip and fennel.  Slippery Elm Bark in powdered form can be stirred into applesauce or water and helps to sooth, it can also be taken in capsule form.  Aloe Vera Juice can also be an effective remedy.

Good probiotics can help by replenishing the good bacteria in the system.  You can eat yogurt (plan and add your own fruit and healthy sweetening) or kefir.  But studies show that capsules may be more effective at replacing the good bacteria.

There are many homeopathic remedies as well.  With homeopathics choose a remedy that matches your symptoms.  We like the Nova brand homeopathics and use the Flu or the Diarrhea remedy depending on the symptoms.

Colloidal Silver has been used for decades as a natural antibiotic and it is also antiviral.

I keep in my little herbal first aid kit just in case of stomach flu symptoms:  a few charcoal capsules in a small container, a small bottle of oregano essential oil, and a small bottle of peppermint essential oil.  The essential oils can be used for many things.  But that way I have some powerful solutions right at my finger tips or on trips.  I even send charcoal capsules with kids when they go off to camps.

You don't have to try all the remedies listed.  I just listed some of my favorites.  And there are many more remedies out there.  You'll find what works best for you.  Also remember that one of the reasons the stomach flu spreads so quickly is due to poor hand washing.  We think good old fashion soap and water works the best.  The reason many people in the same family get it, is because they ate the same food that was contaminated.  When 1 person gets sick, you can begin using some of the remedies to help stop the spread or to get a jump start in the system.
